The Descent

Went to go see The Descent last night just because it was the only horror movie showing, I don't have television so I can't really say whether this is being advertised or not, but I know that my brother never heard of it either and he is pretty into the genre. People should go see this film. To my knowledge it is the only horror movie to get a 5 star rating from renowned fatty Roger Ebert. I have heard that giving too much away about this film ruins it for others so I will not say too much, in fact I would go so far as to say you should even avoid watching the trailer as it will give away enough to affect your experience. I will say this - disregard the cheesy lens-flare computer graphics in the opening credits and if you are anything like me and the entire rest of the audience watching it with me, you will soon be squirming in your seat and jumping around yelling "Oh shit!" Don't worry though, it's not just a pointless sequence of boo! moments, the scares are deep and lasting and ultimately the movie leaves you with a satisfying, if somewhat unsettling, feeling. I know as I descended into the parking garage to leave the theatre I couldn't help but get that sick feeling like something was about to go wrong...

I generally don't go see horror films because generally speaking, they don't scare me. So I think, what's the point? The last one I saw was Silent Hill and that was only for lack of anything better playing the day we went. I can also remember seeing The Grudge a couple of years back. Again, not scary. The Ring was pretty good but it's tough to differentiate the movie from the love of my life, Naomi Watts. But the Ring, if I remember correctly, was more a good, well written, well acted movie than it was scary. In fact, I can say with great certainty that the last movie I saw that genuinely scared me was The Blair Witch Project. I believed that movie was true and real when I first saw it so that's why I was so scared by it. Now, it's just silly. A movie I have been looking forward to from the TV commercials though is Pulse, which opens this weekend. I really don't know anything about the movie - which is preferable - but it looks pretty good. I've been fooled before though.

It's not Descent, but I watched Hostel tonight. Another scary movie that fails to scare. If anything, I'm a little scared to go to Europe now. But god damn, those two girls are f'ing smokin... I'd give two fingers to have that italian/russian chick for a night or two. As long as they were my fourth and fifth fingers on my left hand.

Anyway, i'm going to go to sleep now and I'm confident my dreams will be invaded by the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Alessandra Ambrosio. Not Elite Hunting.
